Work is a Fabrication

Paul Rutherford recorded on 12/06/2023

Paul Rutherford lives in Garforth and grew up in Headingly. Studying design at York St John and then staying on in York for a few years until meeting his now wife, who lived in Leeds. At the same time as that Paul was also starting his business in Leeds. It just made sense to move back.

Paul is now the director of Three Create, a 50/50 partnership with business partner Matt. In a nutshell Three Create design and manufacture a wide range of products and provide an equally wide range of services. In business for 9 years this October Three Create work on projects such as shop fittings, Marketing activations, event builds and much much more. Three Create have a workshop just outside of Leeds in Knottingley and moved there due to “massive cost increases in Leeds city centre”.

Just before starting the business and meeting his wife Kate, Paul was struggling with anxiety and having panic attacks. Paul says that the experience “changed my confidence and direction in life. Everything unfolded for the better in the end, but I still must battle with those mental health struggles when they decide to creep in!”

About the Podcast

Working Hours
The Story of Work in Leeds in the 2020s
What do you do?
Western Studios, Leeds presents Working Hours: a podcast series surveying the people of Leeds on their thoughts and feelings on the topic of work. I want to talk to my city about work. Why do we do it? Do we like it? What could we do differently? What will we? How does work change and how does it change us?
Leeds, the largest city in the largest county on the UK mainland, is a former imperial textile centre and is now a major UK financial centre. This series will document the city’s experiences through Lockdown, Brexit, creeping technological unemployment, new and continuing resource wars, the ongoing dismantling of the welfare state and our accelerating ecological emergency.
If you are in Leeds or from Leeds then help me to reach my target of interviewing 1000 Loiners over the 2020s. Let me ask you, what do you do?
